Tomb of the Kings Paphos
published onI recently visited the Tombs of the kings in Paphos, Cyprus and an incredible place it is too. Very close to sea and this has caused a lot of erosion of the site. It is a necropolis situated a mile or so North of Paphos Harbour a series of Tombs carved out of solid rock. The site dates back to the 4th century BC, Paphitic aristocrats and high officials were thought to have been buried here. The name comes from the magnificence of the tombs; no kings were in fact buried here. Some of the tombs feature Doric columns and frescoed walls. Archaeological excavations are still being carried out at the site. The tombs are cut into the native rock, and at times imitated the houses of the living. It was incredibly cheap to get in €2.50 if in Paphos it’s a must to visit.
